Emergency Lock Change in NYC: What a Van Carries at 3 a.m.

A lock change in New York City can be done at 3 a.m., and the ordinary ones finish on the spot that night. What cannot finish overnight is anything depending on a part nobody carries on a van: a restricted key cut against a signature card, a matched mortise case for a pre-war door.

So the question at two in the morning is not whether someone will come. It is which of two outcomes you are buying: secure tonight and finished, or secure tonight with the permanent hardware fitted in daylight. Both are legitimate. Paying a night rate for the second without being told so is not.

The Four Situations That Genuinely Cannot Wait

Four overnight triggers hold up: someone forced the door tonight; your keys left with something carrying your address, a wallet with ID or a bag with mail; a person excluded from the home by a court order still holds a working key; or the lock has failed in a way that leaves the door unable to secure at all.

Everything else is a morning job, and a locksmith who says otherwise is selling you the clock. The test is whether the door locks tonight and whether anyone with a motive knows where it is. A key a former roommate may have kept for two years fails it.

A Break-In: Secure Tonight, Replace Properly Tomorrow

Get an NYPD complaint number before the hardware conversation starts. You need it for an insurance claim, and managing agents routinely want it on file before authorising work on a building door. NYPD's own form says the number comes from the precinct or detective squad concerned, between 7 a.m. and midnight.

Then understand what broke. A forced apartment door in New York frequently fails at the jamb and the strike rather than at the cylinder. The bolt survives and the frame gives way, a split wood jamb in a walk-up or a pried strike on hollow metal, and rekeying a cylinder nobody defeated does nothing.

Overnight a technician can set a standard deadbolt into the existing prep, anchor the strike with three-inch screws reaching the framing behind the jamb, and make the door lock and stay locked. Jamb repair, door replacement and anything a managing agent must approve wait for daylight. Plan to replace a forced or damaged lock rather than rekey it, then work the full morning-after checklist.

Stolen Keys With Your Address Attached

Stolen keys are an overnight job only when they travelled with something identifying where they fit: a wallet, a piece of mail, a delivery label, a tagged building fob. A ring dropped on the F train with nothing attached is a daytime problem.

When the address did travel, change the cylinders on your own door tonight, normally two on a New York apartment door: the deadbolt and the latch or rim lock. Where the hardware itself is sound it is cheaper and faster to rekey rather than replace, where that is enough.

The building's front door is not yours to decide. A stolen common-entrance key is a managing agent decision and a whole-building job, because every key in the building stops working the moment that cylinder changes. Report it in writing tonight.

A Household Change and a Hearing in the Morning

This is the trigger people are least willing to name on the phone, and the one with the most law attached. Under Family Court Act § 842 an order of protection can direct a respondent to stay away from the home, for a period not in excess of two years, or five where the court finds aggravating circumstances or a violation of a prior order.

That stay-away-from-the-home condition has to be written into the order, because not every order of protection carries it. Have the order or the docket number to hand. A technician should read it before touching the cylinder, and one who does not ask is not protecting you.

Without a court order the picture reverses. Changing the locks on someone who has lawfully occupied the home for thirty consecutive days or longer, or who holds or has asked for a lease, and not supplying them with a key, is an unlawful eviction under NYC Administrative Code § 26-521 unless it is done pursuant to a warrant of eviction or another order of a court. That version of the job is scheduled daytime work with a marshal standing at the door, never a 3 a.m. call.

The city's HOME+ program, run through the Mayor's Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence, replaces locks, doors and windows for survivors at no cost, with basic lock installation or replacement within 24 hours, and no longer requires an order of protection or a police response. Providers are borough by borough: Bronx 1-800-664-5880, Brooklyn 1-718-922-7980, Manhattan 1-877-783-7794, Queens 1-888-888-7702, Staten Island 1-917-524-5819.

What a Van Actually Carries at 3 a.m.

Stocked, and therefore finishable tonight: standard five-pin and six-pin cylinders in the common keyways, rim cylinders for Segal-style surface locks, residential deadbolts, reinforced strikes, and temporary securing hardware. The Schlage B60N, a Grade 2 auxiliary lock, is the ordinary overnight answer on a bored door and the hardware the price band below covers. Schlage's commercial B600 series, certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.36-2020 Grade 1 with a conventional cylinder, is a scheduled daytime order, not a van part.

Not stocked: restricted keyways. Medeco's electronic carded programs go furthest: the dealer swipes your authorisation card through a reader that queries a factory host server, and the bitting comes back before anything is cut. Mul-T-Lock issues a magnetically coded Key Order Card that an authorised dealer's own machine has to read first. Either way it is a next business day item by design, which is the whole reason to own one.

Before the van arrives, photograph the damage and find whatever keys you still have. Expect 20 to 40 minutes off-peak, longer overnight and across a bridge or tunnel.

After-Hours Pricing, and How to Screen the Call

Job Published price Finishes overnight
Rekey, standard door from $85 Yes, standard keyway
Apartment door, both cylinders $85 to $150 Yes
Grade 2 deadbolt supplied and installed $125 to $250 Yes, if already bored
Lockout, 6 p.m. to 2 a.m., then 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. $125, then $195 Not applicable
Restricted-keyway cylinder Quoted per system No, next business day

Those two lockout figures are the only after-hours prices this shop publishes, and the gap between them is $70. Night lock work is quoted before anything is installed rather than surcharged by a set amount, so make whoever answers say the night figure in dollars and write it on the work order.

Screening takes two minutes. A locksmith business here needs a DCWP licence under Administrative Code § 20-299, and § 20-304 requires it displayed. Check a name or number free through DCWP's Check License lookup on nyc.gov, and know how the scam vans work before the phone rings.

One test almost nobody knows: § 20-303 requires any key a licensed locksmith cuts to be stamped with the locksmith's name and address or licence number, master keys additionally marked "master." That covers keys made on the van, not the factory-cut keys in the box with a new deadbolt. Paired with a licence nobody will show you, and a phone price of $29 that becomes $450 at the door, it is the third signal in one night. A licensed 24-hour emergency locksmith in NYC quotes the same number on the phone and at the door.

When the Building Owes the Overnight Repair

If the failed lock is on the building's entrance door rather than yours, the money is probably not yours. NYC Administrative Code § 27-2005(a) states that the owner of a multiple dwelling shall keep the premises in good repair.

Under 1 RCNY § 42-01(d) and (e), every street, court, yard or cellar entrance to a class A multiple dwelling of eight or more apartments must have automatic self-closing and self-locking doors and an intercom, whether it was put up after 1 January 1968 or brought under the rule in 1969. Subdivision (f) requires every self-locking door to be openable from the inside without keys. A front door propped open because the lock no longer catches is a code condition, not a building quirk.

HPD class Meaning Correction window from service
A Non-hazardous 90 days
B Hazardous 30 days
C, general Immediately hazardous 24 hours
C, lead paint, window guards, mold, vermin Immediately hazardous 21 days
C, self-closing doors Immediately hazardous 14 days
C, heat and hot water Immediately hazardous No time period given

A lock that no longer catches is a general Class C, the 24-hour line; the 14-day row covers a door that will not swing shut on its own. The class matters more than the section number. In HPD's own violation records a broken lock at the building entrance door is usually Class C, while on an apartment entrance door the same defect splits: a little under two thirds Class C with 24 hours, the rest Class B with 30 days. Read the violation itself rather than assuming which clock you have.

File with 311 that night so the record carries a timestamp. If the owner misses an immediately hazardous deadline, HPD may repair it through the Emergency Repair Program and charge the cost to the premises, where it can become a tax lien.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a locksmith change my locks in the middle of the night in NYC?

Yes, for standard hardware. A rekey or deadbolt swap on an ordinary apartment door finishes overnight, because the van carries common cylinders, residential deadbolts, rim cylinders and strikes. Restricted keyways such as Medeco and Mul-T-Lock cannot: those keys are cut only against a registered authorisation card held by an authorised dealer, which Medeco validates against a factory server first.

How much more does an emergency lock change cost after hours?

Expect a stated figure, not a multiplier. The only after-hours prices published here are for lockouts: $125 from 6:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. and $195 from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m., a gap of $70. Night lock work is quoted before anything is installed, against daytime rates of $85 to $150 for a standard apartment door.

My keys were stolen along with my ID. What do I actually need changed?

Change the cylinders on your own unit door tonight, which on most New York apartment doors means two. The common entrance is a managing agent decision, because changing that cylinder invalidates every key in the building. Report the loss in writing the same night and get an NYPD complaint number.

Does my landlord have to fix a broken entrance door overnight?

The owner of a multiple dwelling must keep the premises in good repair under Administrative Code § 27-2005, and a broken lock on a building entrance door is usually cited by HPD as a Class C immediately hazardous violation with a 24-hour correction window. File with 311 the same night to start that clock; if the owner misses it, HPD can repair it and bill the property.

How do I avoid a bait-and-switch locksmith on a 3 a.m. call?

Ask for the licence, the full price and the hardware brand on the phone, and refuse any answer that defers the number until arrival. A DCWP licence is verifiable free through the Check License lookup on nyc.gov. Then look at any key cut for you on site: § 20-303 requires it to be stamped with the locksmith's name and address or licence number, and an unmarked one is worth a question before you pay.
